How I found balance and passion in my pastry career

To be honest, I wasn’t always diligent. In the past, I drank heavily and spent most nights out with friends who shared similar habits. When I began working in the pastry industry, where shifts often start as early as 3 a.m., I didn’t quit drinking—I simply shifted my timeline, drinking in the afternoons instead of at night.

In November 2024, I made a conscious decision to change my lifestyle. With the support of my partner, I significantly reduced my drinking to just once or twice a month. Instead of going out, we now enjoy healthier routines like taking peaceful night strolls, visiting the sauna, or swimming. While I haven’t yet developed a habit of going to the gym, these changes have made my daily routine more balanced and meaningful.

Currently, I work part-time in the pastry department of a hotel in Canberra, and it’s been an incredible experience. The large-scale, high-quality pastry production process inspires me every day. I’m surrounded by colleagues who share my passion for pastry, creating an atmosphere of teamwork and creativity that I’ve missed for years.

Back in Korea, I often worked in restaurants where I lacked the guidance of senior staff. It was a lonely experience, and I struggled to feel connected to my work. Here in Canberra, I’m part of a supportive team where we collaborate, share ideas, and divide responsibilities. This sense of community has reignited my passion for baking.

One of the things I love most about my current role is the emphasis on seasonality. Every three months, the menu changes to reflect seasonal ingredients, and we celebrate nearly every traditional event. This constant evolution keeps the work exciting and meaningful.

What’s more, there’s no expectation of overtime or working outside of my scheduled hours. This allows me to maintain a healthy work-life balance while fully immersing myself in my craft.

This journey has taught me the value of balance, community, and finding joy in the process of creating. Whether it’s reducing stress, finding inspiration in seasonal menus, or working alongside passionate teammates, I’ve discovered a more peaceful and fulfilling way to live and work.
